However I gave the cabinet a twist to the design by making it into "Rhombus", having in mind to provide an optical illusion of dynamism when seen from a distance, when presented in a series of four, with highest pods at 3.0 meters and the lowest pods at 1.8 meters.

The intention is to see the viewers slide in between the pods.

Graffiti art, celebrated as an alternative, youth-centric art form in the mass media, has the unique ability to reach out and connect with the youths through its usage of bold colours and imagery. In recent years, such striking “graffiti-esque” visiuals have been extensively used to launch and market youth-oriented campaigns and products.

Local graffiti artist, Zul Othman aka ZERO, investigates the relationship between graffiti art, advertising, and youth-oriented consumer culture in his graffiti art show, The Spectacular Spectacular.

As a practitioner of graffiti art, ZERO started out creating his work illegally around the city and his neighbourhood. After his graffiti works caught the attention of corporate companies and was subsequently commissioned to produce art pieces for them, ZERO began to explore the notion of the graffiti artist as a brand and the idea of utilising graffiti art as a branding strategy.

Reminiscent of Yoshitomo Nara’s artwork, ZERO’s visuals and characters in The Spectacular Spectacular provoke audience reactions by parodying well-known brands such as Levi’s and Starbucks. Thorough the invention of his own personal style and “brand”, ZERO investigates how graffiti art influences and connects with the youths through marketing strategies and campaigns, whilst making an insidious commentary on the changing state and ideology of graffiti art.

This is ZERO’s first solo exhibition at The Substation.

Graffiti Artist

A graduate from NAFA with a Diploma in Visual Communications, and the Lasalle College of the Arts with a Diploma in Painting and a BA (Hons) in Fine Arts, Zul aka ZERO, is a member of the urban arts collective, ARTVSTS. In 2007, he was appointed as an Associate Artist of The Substation.

Zul’s art revolves around street culture, pop culture and current affairs. Zul is consistently creating dialogue and social commentary through his art, which constantly evolves as he tries to integrate the function of design and advertising within the framework of conceptual art and traditional fine art.

Zul has been involved in numerous events and exhibitions, and has been an integral part in the growth of ARTVSTS collective since its formation in late 2003. Zul was a shortlisted nominee for the President’s Young Artist Awards 2005 and is currently a lecturer with Lasalle College of the Arts.

\\: The Singapore River as a Psychogeographical Faultline, conceptualised and produced by 26-year-old Singaporean artist, Debbie Ding, will be presented as part of this year's Open Call 2010, an annual showcase first initiated by The Substation in 2008 to support strongly artistic, critical and rigorous visual arts proposals.
This exhibition will examine and explore the role of the Singapore River as a 'psychogeographical faultline', where reality, memories and imagined spaces interact, merge, or drift apart, through a unique interactive and generative map installation. 
Generated by algorithms, the installation will help the audience to make sense of the significance of the river, as well as better understand its history and geography.
During the exhibition, the audience will also be invited to take part in an interactive exercise, where they can mark a map of the Singapore River with both real and fictional landmarks, stories, and memories, creating, in turn, their own mythology for the river.

FISH TANK BLUES I, II and III

I always wonder if fishes in tanks are bored!

These series of digital paintings are quite self-explanatory, the background paintings were inspired and mimic from Chinese ink paintings, however the texture surface were actually developed from coffee stains, yes COFFEE STAINS! The blue inks were actually coffee stains that were scanned, altered, filtered and finally saved as Adobe Photoshop Brush Strokes tools and painted painstakingly to create the painterly yet flat surface.

Typography illustrations like those from mangas or comics were then appropriated as sound, lettering and explosive effects to create a speed-like feel with an adrenaline rush.

Influenced by storyboarding, intentions are: When FISH TANK BLUES I, II and III are placed side by side, the idea is to create a sequence of a simple story of illogical thinking, hillarious explosions, that a Superhero Fish speeding off the crowd...To go with the flow or not?

Top > Traditionally, the barong was an indispensable part of the Moro's attire, specifically the Tausug, Samal, & Yakan warriors of the Sulu Archipelago. Barongs were infamous amongst the Moros for there use in juramentado (non-Muslim slayings). The leaf-shaped blade makes the barong distinguishable from other Filipino weaponry. The blades range from 12“ to 18“ in length, are single edged, & guard-less. So the barong will not slip out of the hand of the wielder during the heat of battle, it is stylized with a "cockatoo beak" (kakatua) handle.

Middle > The keris is a dagger unique to the Malay world. It is found in Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Southern Thailand (Patani), Southern Philippines (Mindanao), Brunei (Darassalam) and supposedly in the Cham areas of Cambodia.

Bottom> The Kampilan is believed to be the main sword that struck down the famous explorer Ferdinand Magellan by the legendary Chief Lapu-lapu. Originally dual pointed with a carved hilt, these swords of the Moros of Sulu and Mindanao are carried by warriors who are in the first line of defense; and actually are considered a national weapon of the Moros of Sulu & Mindanao. History shows a single swinging motion (like a baseball bat swing), can chop two heads (in which these swords are made for) at a time. So far, it is believed to be the longest sword of the Filipino warriors. The Kampilan is a heavy double pointed sword with a rich history in the Philippines. As maintained by tradition, the Kampilan is about 40" to 44" with a carved hilt with a single edge. Kampilans were widely used as "head-hunting" swords on enemies in the southern Philippines. The handle is shaped like a jaw of reptile lizards and alligator makes this sword unique in appearance. In the past, strands of hair is attached to the butt-end of the handle for a more appealing and intimidating look.

This finely rendered campaign map of islands in the Samales Group in the Sulu Archipelago documents the February 1848 Spanish naval attack on the island of Balanguingui. In the 1840's, the Spanish government in the Philippines had entered into a series of treaties related to trade and allegiance with Muslim rulers in the southern islands. When these treaties were broken by the Muslim leaders, Spanish Governor General, Narciso Clavería, organized a naval expedition that left Manila on February 9, 1848 to attack Muslim strongholds on Balanguingui (especially those at Sipac, Sungap, and Balanguingui). As a result of that successful campaign, Spain strengthened its authority over the region. Map includes coastlines, coastal features, soundings, various categories of Spanish and Muslim vessels, and settlements; also includes detailed pictorial representation of island vegetation and a panoramic profile view: "Vista del fuerte de Sipac". Map contains a brief note on the naval situation on the day when Fort Sipac surrendered. For more information on this event and on Philippine history, see Antonio M. Silat is an umbrella term used to describe the martial art forms practiced throughout the Malay Archipelago. Silat is a combative art of fighting and survival and it has been evolved in Indonesia and Malaysia civilizations for centuries into social culture and tradition.[1] During the colonization era, both in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam as British colonies and in Indonesia as Dutch colonies, practitioners (locally known as pesilat) used the martial art as a form to liberate from foreign authorities.

The distinctive forms of silat with other Asian martial arts, such as kung fu, tae kwon do or karate, lie on the cultural aspect. Silat is not only for combative purposes. When accompanied with traditional instruments, such as kendang, silat transforms into a folk dance. In Minangkabau area (the West Sumatra province of Indonesia), silat was the oldest men's tradition known as silek and it is one of the components to perform the Minangkabau folk dance of randai.[2] In Malaysia, one form of silat known of silat pulut also shows the harmonic silat styles as a dance accompanied by traditional instruments. A silat form in West Java province of Indonesia, known as pencak, is usually accompanied with music, notably by the traditional Sundanese suling instrument.

The body of anything is what holds each individual parts of something together. A collective term used to describe a state of being. At least this is how we see it. As humans, our body is what we are. It represents us visually and physically to portray what our heart feels and what our mind wants us to do. Without our body, we will just be roaming souls in search of space¡an entity to call our own.

As the five of us started to realise how the term 'body' can be translated into so many meanings, we realised how much impact a body of something can be. To us, the subject "body" doesn't only apply to a physical formation that we are all able to see. The term is an interesting subject that can be manipulated in so many ways.

Nobodies' Body will represent one body of thought; the individual interpretation.

Fort Pilar was built by the Spaniards in 1635 to ward off attacks from the Moros and foreign invaders. As we all know, the Spaniards first landed in the Philippines in the 1500's but it was not until 1635 when a force of 300 Spaniards and 1000 Visayan troops under the command of Captain Juan Chavez, together with Jesuit priest Melchor de Vera, reached the shore of Zamboanga.

Originally named Real Fuerza de San Jose, the fort was huge enough to house the living quarters of the Spanish officials, the soldiers and their families. Inside were the church, school and hospital, much like in the Intamuros, the Walled City in Manila.

By 1663, the Real Fuerza de San Jose was abandoned, as part of Spain's strategy to re-enforce its troops in Manila and Cavite against the local insurrections. For 55 years, Zamboanga and the fort were left at the mercy of Sultan Qudarat and the other native leaders who laid siege for the control of the fort. During this period, the natives destroyed all the improvements and fortification including the church while the Christian converts reverted to Islam.

Due to the clamor of the Jesuits, the Royal government reconsidered the popular request to reopen the fort and continue the evangelization among the natives. So in 1718, the fort was re-established and in January of 1734, the soldiers brought along with them the image of the Lady of Pilar from Zaragosa as their Patron. It was then that the fort was renamed Real Fuerza de Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragosa, whose statue was embossed on the east wall as a front piece atop the entrance. This was eventually sealed off when it became a shrine. Legends have it that the Lady of Pilar performed a number of miracles during that time. When Americans captured the fort in 1899, the fort came to be known simply as Fort Pilar.

Today, Fort Pilar serves as a museum of arts for the many different tribes of Zamboanga. These are the Badjaos, Yakans, Samals, Subanens and the Tausogs. They will be the subjects in our succeeding stories.

Here is the "capoeira fighter" sequence from "TOM YUM GOONG" note: by the same directer who has done "Ong Bak". The vid is cut with external music edited my me.
